Film Description
Set in the rural surroundings of a French village, Tati is Francois the postman in this satire on the modern obsession with speed and efficiency. He tries to speed up his round during a visit by the fair. This is fertile ground for Tati's energy and imagination to set to work in and the invention and above all, timing is utterly superb. The evocation of rural France really is from another century.

Review by Graeme on
Wonderful film from a genius of a director. The fair comes to the village and Francois the postman (Tati) attempts to speed up his delivery system. The scenes of impeccable comic timing that follow take place within settings that resemble a Dufy painting come to life. With more than a hint of the ‘democratic comedy’ that would be more fully realised in his later films, the restored colour print brings Tati’s vision alive. A film to gladden the heart.

The four films Jacques Tati made from 1947 to 1967 are treasures of comic observation. There is the careering slapstick and rural charm of Jour de Fête in which the fair brings life and colour to town and François the postman attempts to speed up his round; th... View article in full
