Great Films About the Middle Ages by Brian Hoyle The 50th anniversary of Bergman's The Seventh Seal and the recent DVD release of films such as Bresson's Lancelot du Lac and František Vláčil's Markéta Lazarová have demonstrated just how many great filmmakers have been drawn to the Middle Ages - in some cases, such as Bergman's and Bresson's - more than once. The following list contains some of the finest films about the Middle Ages currently available. Sadly, a number of other great films about the period: Eric Rohmer's Perceval, Walerian Borowczyk's Blanche, Jacques Rivette's Jeanne la Pucelle, Bertrand Tavanier's Beatrice and Leslie Megahey's The Hour of the Pig are currently unavailable (at least on DVD in the UK). Let's hope this is rectified soon.
