Review by Rena Markogiannaki on 27th January 2007
Although best known for spawning a saccharine, though wildly successful, Hollywood remake with Tom Selleck, the original French film of Three Men and a Baby is by far the better film. It follows Jacques, Michel and Pierre, three bachelors who pledge that they will never let a woman spend more than one night at their apartment. Their irresponsible lifestyle is threatened when they find a baby girl abandoned on their doorstep.
Scenes of beautifully-timed broad comedy and numerous amusing misunderstandings unfold in a drug-related sub-plot which adds piquancy to what could have been a formulaic
narrative.
Although the film is a comedy first and foremost, it is nevertheless thoughtful and sensitive with some sharply-observed moments that capture the quirks of human nature succinctly.
It could almost be read as a female fantasy, in which every bachelor can change his attitude when a baby appears. The film deservedly won three French Césars, including
Best Film.
