Review by CJ on 2nd June 2000 A modern British classic, Anderson successfully captures the atmosphere and latent cruelty of an English public school, examining with razor sharp wit the workings of an institution both quintessentially British that also serves as a sharp allegory about the workings of any tightly structured community. The controversial denouement where a trio of rebelling students set about shooting teachers and fellow students alike from the rooftop of a school building was inspired by Jean Vigo's 'Zero de Conduite' and the success of the film led to an extended collaboration between Anderson, McDowell and writer David Sherwin in which they continued to trace and develop McDowell's character.
