Orlando

Orlando - A fascinating, rich and intelligent version of Virginia Woolf

This film is not currently available on DVD.

Film Description

A fascinating, rich and intelligent version of Virginia Woolf's novel, concerning the adventures of the eponymous gender-changing central character (strikingly played by Swinton), through the course of centuries. Revered by many feminist critics in particular, this is one of the most distinctive and satisfying British films of the decade.

Review by Barry Forshaw on 16th May 2003

Sally Potter's films have always been accomplished, but definitely something of an acquired taste. Her career has also been marked by some highly indulgent film making, but that is certainly not the case with this triumphant adaptation of Virginia Woolf's uncharacteristic novel. This is both an intelligent and accomplished rendering of the tale of the seemingly immortal Orlando from his time at the court of Elizabeth 1st as a man through the passing of 400 years when he ends up female. Tilda Swinton gives a remarkable performance in the title role, and receives strong support from such actors as Billy Zane and John Wood. Whether the casting of Quentin Crisp as Elizabeth 1st is more than just an asinine gimmick is for the viewer to decide.

'Orlando' is a fascinating, rich and intelligent version of Virginia Woolf's novel, involving the adventures of the eponymous gender-changing central character (strikingly played by Tilda Swinton), through the course of centuries. Applauded by many feminist critics in particular, it is one of the most distinctive and satisfying British films of its decade.
