Based on the book by Cornelius Ryan, Attenboroughs star studded WW2 blockbuster relates the allied attempt to carry out Montgomery's ambitious and fated plan to capture six Dutch bridges in the face of fierce German opposition. The cast list of big name actors seems never ending (Olivier, Redford, Hackman amongst others all deliver brief cameo apprearances) and the lengthy, action-packed proceedings are given distinction by Geoffrey Unsworth's fine cinematography.
