Film Description

aka Le Salaire de la Peur. Clouzot's excellent film is set in a seedy Latin-american outpost, a freelance world of ex-pat oil workers and tanker drivers where anything goes. Greed is the name of the game and crazy risks must be taken. The heroic and sordid struggle to transport nitro-glycerine to put out an oil fire is magnificently portrayed, and Montand is at the handsome height of his charm. Karel Reisz memorably described the film as 'unselectively and impartially anti-everything'!

Review by Nicky on 3rd February 2002

I saw this movie over 40 years ago. I always thought this was the greatest movie I ever saw.I was quite excited to watch it again after such a long time. And it is still one of the greatest movies of my life! Incredible tension building, fantastic characters, and the unexpected ending a masterpiece.Yves Montand is a particular favourite of mine as an actor and as a chanson singer. His other great movie "the wide blue road"
will hopefully appear in this lists.

Article - "Henri-Georges Clouzot: The Cinema of Pleurisy" by David Parkinson
Thursday 25th September 2003

Having failed to fulfil his naval, legal and journalistic ambitions, Henri-Georges Clouzot turned to screenwriting with Carmine Gallone’s Ma Cousine de Varsovie in 1931. Later the same year, he made his directorial debut with the short, La Terreur des Batig...  View article in full
