One of the most sumptuous musicals to ever grace the silver screen. Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr command the screen in their unforgettable roles as The King of Siam and Mrs Anna. Their mismatched coupling brings to the fore issues of slavery, barbarism, loyalty and duty, with both dignity and passion. The location shots and interior designs conjure a world of exotic opulence, strengthened by the Oriental subtleties of Richard Rodgers melodic score. The highlights must be the ‘Small House of Uncle Thomas’ ballet that unfolds via a melange of dance, colour and choral song, and the sight of Brynner and Kerr gliding through the palace to the strains of the unforgettable ‘Shall we Dance’. Arguably the finest onscreen representation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s illustrious careers. RT.

The recent cartoon remake only serves to make this one look even better. Great tunes, beautiful decor, and a thrilling pairing between the seemingly mismatched stars. Shall we dance?
