Film Description

Review by anonymous on 6th March 2000

Sansho the Bailiff is based on an ancient legend and set in the harsh feudal world of eleventh-century Japan. In its intensity, compassion, dramatic sweep and breathtaking formal beauty it is one of his greatest films. "The greatest of Japanese film-makers. Or quite simply one of the greatest film-makers" Jean-Luc Godard.

Review by JD on 14th August 1999

In 11th century Japan, a humane provincial governor is sent into exile. While travelling to meet up with him his wife, son and daughter encounter cruel misfortune. One of the great masters of cinema, Mizoguchi has been described as the Shakespeare of film. This is his finest, most sublime masterpiece: an engrossing, immensely moving adventure, blest with exquisite beauty , lovely compositions, serene, fluid camerawork and the Japanese landscape at its most ravishing. Voted among the 100 greatest films in many international polls including 'Time Out' and 'Sight and Sound'.
