A smart and unpredictable heist thriller, The Usual Suspects on original release was unfairly compared to Tarantino’s self-consciously hip level of moviemaking but with time and its growth in cult status, this dense and bemusing crime classic proves itself to be more intriguing than the subsequent trend of crime clichés born of Tarantino could ever hope to be.

Bryan Singers taut and complex follow up to his debut feature Public Access, reveals itself as are commodity in modern film-making, revealing itself to be a film which continues to confound audiences nearly a decade later, still posing the films major question, who is Keyzer Soze?

Centring on the simple but effective premise of five supposedly unconnected petty criminals brought in for the now iconic police line-up, which is later discovered to have been orchestrated by the mysterious Soze who uses the quintet to mastermind a supposedly routine heist on a drug smuggling ship. Relayed in flashback by the only survivor, the crippled Verbal Kint whilst in custody, the story begins to focus on the identity of the elusive crimelord.

Christopher McQuarrie’s rug-pulling screenplay provides a wealth of conjecture and distrust leading those who follow the films cerebral storyline to disregard everything they have believed, right up to the justifiably famous final twist, which begs the need to re-evaluate everything that has gone before.

Still admired as one of the films of the 90’s, The Usual Suspects continues to influence filmmakers and keep audiences asking who is Keyzer Soze?
