Review by R. Dixon-Smith on 18th December 2006

An archetypal film noir with a classic twist: its narrative flashbacks are urban, but much of the action takes place in a rural setting. Directed at RKO with memorable visual flair by Jacques Tourneur, it contains all the genre’s familiar conventions: doom-laden souls struggling through a heavily shadowed atmosphere of passion and betrayal; tightly meshed suspense full of double and triple-crosses; a cynical femme fatale; a man trying to escape his past and the mobster out for his blood. This is Mitchum at his sleepy-eyed, sneering, tough-guy best, hiding out in a small town until his past catches up with him. With stunning cinematography by Nicholas Musuraca, Out of the Past is simply one of the most definitive crime pictures Hollywood ever made.

Article - "Robert Mitchum - Boxer, Hobo, Actor" by Sue Levan
Thursday 17th May 2007

Robert Mitchum was famously dismissive of his own profession. Indeed the title of his 1975 biography by Mike Tomkies was 'It Sure Beats Working’ which demonstrates the amused detachment with which Mitchum viewed acting. He felt he was one lucky guy to have dropped in...  View article in full

classic film noir by eddie davies

I'm putting together a wish list for my 60th birthday and one of the genres i've always been interested in is film noir. I watched most of these in my old flea pit cinema in south wales but i'm sure they'll stand up well to viewing in DVD format. Comments and of course any essential titles i should add to mo list welcomed.

films that inspired, taught or moved me by pilar munoz

Living in Franco's Spain as a child, films were the only window to the outside world. My weekly visits to the cinema became a habit I still mantain.
