Film Description

One of the most famous and beloved films of all time, featuring an utterly beguiling performance by a young Judy Garland. The switch from black and white to glorious Technicolor heightens the magic, which is further enhanced by the delightfully imaginative score, the highlight of which must be the enchanting 'Over the Rainbow'. A film that appeals to generation after generation.

Review by JD on 31st August 2000

Black-and-white and colour. Still possibly the most beloved family film ever made. Spare a thought for unsung Margaret Hamilton. Flushed with excitement at being offered a part in the film, she enquired which role she was intended to play. Came the reply, "The witch of course - who else?". JD

Review by RT on 28th September 2000

One of the most famous and beloved films of all time. A charming musical fantasy, featuring an utterly beguiling performance by a young Judy Garland, ably supported by a host of tremendous character actors. These talented performers weave an enchanting spell as we follow Dorothy and company, on their journey to visit the Wizard of Oz. The switch from black and white to glorious Technicolor serves to heighten the film’s magic. This is topped off by a delightfully imaginative score that really drives the action forward, the highlight of which must be the enchanting and timeless ‘Over the Rainbow’, a song that only truly captivates when delivered by Garland’s distinctive tones. A film that appeals to generation after generation. RT.

Article - "The Hollywood Studio System in the 1930s" by David Parkinson
Thursday 8th May 2008

The Americans didn't invent the studio system, but they certainly made the most effective use of it. Primarily headed by ‘moguls’ of European descent, the Hollywood studios were divided into five ‘majors’, three ‘minors’ and the various independents and B-hives on Po...  View article in full

Cult Classics! by Dean Broughton

Some films are not well received on their initial release. However, thanks to television showings, or home video/dvd releases, these films find a certain audience. These are known as 'cult' films. They are usually off-beat, and unconventional, and in some cases obscure.

Oscars Winners - Great films, up to 70% off by MovieMail

This year, MovieMail has decided to dispense with the standard list of award-winners, and lift the curtain on some of the lesser-known categories in which many rare and exciting films reside.
The following movies were singled out for important aspects of the film-making craft and, we think, are the titles which glister brightest in Uncle Oscar's auric eye.

Road Movies by Myles McLeod

I love those rambling road and river journeys that take characters on an unpredictable amble from the normal to the surreal, paranormal, quirky or plain bizarre.
