Film Description

One of the best British comedy crime capers in which a gang of ex-servicemen under the direction of an embittered former army officer harness their skills to an organised heist.

Jack Hawkins plays the former army officer who is bitter at being made to take early retirement. Using his special access to military personnel files, he begins to plot a £1 million bank robbery and sets about gathering an unlikely assortment of accomplices. Spiv Nigel Patrick, con man Roger Livesey, shifty mechanic Richard Attenborough, gigolo Bryan Forbes (who also wrote the BAFTA-nominated screenplay) and blackmail victim Kieron Moore are among the disgruntled ex-servicemen only too happy to get their own back on the system. The film's plotting and direction are as taut as the job itself.

Review by BArry on 9th November 2006

It’s a shame that this title is now so ineluctably associated with the TV comedy show that hijacked it – Dearden & Forbes’ smart and intelligent British heist movie is as diverting as ever. Dearden was always a journeyman director, but Bryan Forbes’ machine-tooled script drew a career-best job from him. Jack Hawkins excels as a former army officer bitter at being forced to retire early. Using his special access to top-secret military personnel files he begins to plot a daring £1 million bank robbery – and sets about gathering a highly skilled, team of accomplices. A who’s who of 1960’s cinema, the film’s copper-bottomed cast include Nigel Patrick Roger Livesey, Richard Attenborough and writer Bryan Forbes himself (who provides a commentary along with other intriguing extras).

Review by Barry Forshaw on 21st January 2004

Forget the comedy series, this is a top-notch heist movie, a British Ocean’s Eleven.
