Film Description

Jose Ferrer makes a touching Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in this beautifully-staged portrait of his life in fin de siècle Paris, in which much of Oswald Morris's cinematography was intended to resemble Lautrec's poster art. Ferrer plays both the painter, frustrated by the deformity of his legs and seeking solace in drink and low life, and also his father.

Review by Barry Forshaw on 25th October 2004

Huston’s spectacularly colourful version of the life of the great French artist Toulouse Lautrec may not quite match Vincent Minnelli's Van Gogh biopic Lust for Life, but it’s a fascinating piece, with Jose Ferrer compelling as the artist.
