Ma Vie En Rose tells the story of Ludovic, a 7-year-old boy whose dream is to be a girl. He lives with his family in suburban France and his wishes soon become known to the local community, causing suspicion and misunderstanding.
This film is absolutely wonderful and a refreshing change- it combines elements of French and American cinema styles to produce a refreshing hybrid. It avoids the typical gloominess and navel-gazing of so many French films, with a strong element of comedy and is visually very colourful, with beautiful dream sequences. However it is well-acted and written and very sensitive and subtle with its subject. The end result is a film which actually means something but is hopeful rather than gloomy.
I would unhesitatingly recommend this film to anyone whether or not they would normally consider watching a non-English-language film. < less
