The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
Film Description A glorious feast of colour in the tradition of the MGM musical with every scene colour-coordinated down to the costumes matching the wallpaper. The score, composed by Michel Legrand, is glorious and every line in the bittersweet film is sung. Deneuve, in one of her first screen roles, is simply lovely and the film is one of the most visually arresting ever made. Winner of the Palme d'Or in 1964.

Review by Barry Forshaw on 4th October 2005 Jacques Demy's films are unique, magical worlds fused with poetry, colour and music. Three of his classic films starring the iconic Catherine Deneuve are available, including a 2 disc Special Edition of Demy's much-loved musical masterpiece The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, featuring the documentary The World of Jacques Demy; the sumptuous fairy tale Donkey Skin and farcical comedy A Slightly Pregnant Man co-starring Marcello Mastroianni. Described by director Demy as 'a film in song', the visually intoxicating The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Les Parapluies de Cherbourg) pays homage to the Hollywood musical and explores how youthful fantasy soon gives way to thwarted dreams.
