Film Description

A woodcutter witnesses an ambush, rape and murder in a forest. In the telling of the tale however, each of the four participants gives a different view of what happened - is anyone telling the truth? This film was arguably the first to alert Western audiences to the riches of Japanese cinema after winning won the top prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1951. Kurosawa said of the film that it deals with people's 'inability to be honest with themselves about themselves'.
