Film Description
Probably Lean's best film with Oscars for art direction and photography. A masterly adaptation from Dickens which fluently blends excitement, suspense and emotion right from the atmospheric opening when young Pip meets Magwitch in the graveyard. Lean handles the transitions from fear to drama and on to comedy with extraordinary ease.

Great Expectations is David Lean's stunning adaptation of Dicken's classic novel. Lean uses lighting beautifully in the scenes within Miss Havisham's house, particularly the opening scene in which the orphaned Pip visits his parents grave and is confronted by the terrifying convict Magwitch. The storyline develops and as tension builds, Lean manages to create a sense of confusion anger and fear as we watch the film through the eyes of the character we have known for the longest, Pip. The scene in which Miss havisham is burnt to death when a coal from the fire catches her decaying bridal wear,Pip tears the table cloth from the long table covered with rotting food from her wedding which never took place and throws it upon her in a desperate attempt to drown the flames, is both dramatic, harrowing and Ironic. A beautifull and touching film from arguably Britain's best director of all time with an ending which leaves many possibilities for te future. < less
