Film Description

A chilling chronicle of an evil mastermind plotting to destabilize a Germany still reeling from W.W.I was clearly a metaphor for the corrupt soul of the Weimar Republic. Mabuse's genius is to strike at the heart of the institutions that Hitler later exploited with money, power and influence. Brilliantly directed and visualised by a film maker at the very summit of his early career.

Article - "Lang and Mabuse" by R. Dixon Smith
Tuesday 6th April 2004

In 1922 Fritz Lang made Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler (Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler), a two-part film adapted from a novel by Norbert Jacques. Lang and Thea von Harbou, his wife and long-time collaborator, wrote the script together. One of the most sensational crime th...  View article in full

Article - "Silent Film Round-Up 2004" by Graeme Hobbs
Friday 5th November 2004

Overall, 2004 has been a good year for DVD releases of silent film in the UK. Most pleasing of all has been the recognition that when silent film is given due respect and presented in restored editions that are well packaged, they are revitalized as major works of ar...  View article in full

Article - "Supervillains in Film: Where are you now?" by James Oliver
Friday 13th July 2007

Supervillainy is a profession in decline. Once upon a time, the authorities would routinely declare themselves ‘baffled’ by the latest well-choreographed crime spree: today, priceless works of art are protected by only modest security; the police confident they won’t...  View article in full

Article - ""Ein Film Von...": The German Films of Fritz Lang" by James Oliver
Friday 25th May 2007

Cinema was born in the last years on the Victorian era, took its baby steps in the first decade of the twentieth century and reached an earnest maturity in the teens. Then, like any irresponsible youngster, it let its hair down and started experimenting to find its l...  View article in full

Article - "Film Preservation: The Nitrate Era " by R. Dixon Smith
Monday 7th April 2008

The year is 1908. The steady torrent of coins increases daily in nickelodeon parlors throughout the world, and every two months the entire population of the globe is exceeded by the number of people patronizing the world’s movie theatres.

But within several...  View article in full

Article - "Orlok in London or Ivor Novello is a vampire" by Graeme Hobbs
Tuesday 29th April 2008

The Lodger is regarded as the first recognisably ‘Hitchcockian’ thriller. As is well known, Alfred Hitchcock spent a formative period of time in Germany where in 1925 he directed his first film, The Pleasure Garden, and The Lodger, made the follo...  View article in full
