Film Description

Tati's gentle satire of sterile modernity and pretentious gadgetry in which his M. Hulot introduces elements of confusion into the Arpels' well-ordered lives, house and factory. There is a wealth of visual riches on display in this exercise in 'democratic comedy', which gives dogs in the street the same comic status as its star.

Review by Keith Povall on 20th January 2003

Tati the silent genious
As a child, I never could see anything funny in the films of Jacques Tati. Later in life I stumbled across the sublime La Jour da Fete and suddenly this man's genius dawned on me.

Whilst this film remains my firm favourite, Mon Oncle runs a very close second. I have a number of friends today, who handle modern technology with the hilarious awkwardness of "mon oncle".

Watch this film and you will have the smile of someone whose cheeks are stuffed with marshmallows.

Review by anonymous on 13th September 1999

A poetic satire on man against machine. "Extraordinary unforgettably funny, wonderfully observed, and always technically brilliant" Time Out.

Article - "Jacques Tati: Democratic Comedy" by Graeme Hobbs
Saturday 30th October 2004

The four films Jacques Tati made from 1947 to 1967 are treasures of comic observation. There is the careering slapstick and rural charm of Jour de Fête in which the fair brings life and colour to town and François the postman attempts to speed up his round; th...  View article in full

Article - "Playtime and Tativille" by Graeme Hobbs
Wednesday 4th August 2004

Tativille, the name given to the enormous glass and concrete set of Playtime, is also a place of magical and delicate transformations; a patch of light on a floor is a glass of milk, a man locking a door is a horned beast, streetlights are lilies of the valley...  View article in full
