Spartacus (Kubrick, 1960)
Film Description If the '50s sword-and-sandal epic threatened to get bogged down in set pieces and fine speeches, this is a tonic. Taking over from veteran Anthony Mann, Kubrick's account of a Roman slave uprising has a terrific revolt sequence and a dynamic performance from Douglas. Great stuff. Listen closely and you may just be able to tell where the soundtrack was lost, with Anthony Hopkins now giving a superb imitation of Olivier's distinctive tones.
