Mean Streets is a raw and energetic look at down town Italian New York in the 1970s.

Harvey Keitel plays Charlie, a novice debt collector employed by his father. He is embarrassed about his work, as he can’t reconcile his morally dubious occupation with his strict Catholic upbringing. On top of that, he feels responsible for his psychotic and self-destructive cousin, Johnny Boy (De Niro), who owes everyone money, including Charlie’s friend, who gets more and more irate as time passes.

Charlie is stuck in the middle, an intermediary uncomfortable with his position, and the tension builds until the film reaches its inevitable and bloody conclusion.

Mean Streets explores the topics close to Scorsese’s heart – the glamorous life of organised crime, religion and troublesome women – and combines it with contemporary music to produce a thrilling and pioneering slice of cinematic history. A passionate, blazing triumph.
