Treated with the appropriate gusto and vigour, this fine and complex film emerges as a good-natured romp. Good looking cast, elegant Victorian setting, and top notch performances.

Review by Arthur Kincaid on 21st January 2000

"a good natured romp" is not how I would sum up this film,
which is very, very complex in its effects, and much finer than this review suggests. It is those things and a lot more. Nor do I feel that Malvolio's fate is "Shakespeare's fault". Bearing in mind that the Puritans kept getting orders passed to close the theatres and successfully did so in 1637, he got what he deserved! It is pretty common for art to pillory its enemies. Cast: why is the leading lady, Alison Stubbs, omitted? Especially when Richard E. Grant was the worst of the cast is included. What about Ben
Kingsley? (Actually, I don't know - not having asked - what criteria govern choice of cast members mentioned and their order.)
