With roots in Eisensteins operatic Ivan the Tarrible, Pleasure Domes camp, orgiastic costume party (guests attired as ancient gods and goddesses) may be irritatingly bombastic, but as a vivid, gorgeously coloured pre-Kubrick lightshow it is rather glorious and quite essential.
