Film Description

Inspired by Herman Melville's 'Billy Budd'. An exploration of the near-mythical world of the French Foreign Legion, as told through a stunning combination of literature, music, poetry and dance. It centres upon Galoup, a sergeant-major whose position and power are threatened when a new recruit's heroism attracts the attention of the platoon's commandant. A powerful examination of masculinity.

Review by Victoria Murray on 24th July 2000

One of the most beautiful, memorable and haunting films I have ever seen - a masterpiece.
The acting, particularly that of Denis Lavant was wonderfully emotive, yet understated. No time or effort is wasted on overblown scenes or cliched storylines - the film drew me in and held me in it's spell until the final exhilarating scene when I sat in the film theatre, unwilling to leave.
The cinematography is truly breathtaking and the director's portrayal of the local Djiboutians bemusement and fascination at the behaviour of the visiting legionnaires is both sensitively done and entertaining, with more than a little humour.
This film stayed with me for days and it's sheer perfection brought me close to tears. See it and die.

Review by Mr A Wright on 19th February 2001

A rewarding cine-poem that lingers in the mind days after watching it - worth watching alone for the final brief dance sequence.
