Fargo
Film Description Returning to a small town setting reminiscent of the Coen Brothers' first film, but this time based in the bleak Minnesota landscape of their childhood, Fargo is an austere morality tale of greed, stupidity and the folly of pretending to be what one is not. Characteristically, it is also laced with an icy black humour. As with all Coen movies, the old cliche - 'Amply repays repeated viewings' -applies. Winner of 2 Academy awards.

Review by PM on 15th March 2004 Fargo (thanks to Frances McDormand's best actress Oscar) seems to have brought the Coens to a slightly wider audience. Returning to a small town setting reminiscent of their first film, but this time based in the bleak Minnesota landscape of their childhood, Fargo is an austere morality tale of greed, stupidity and the folly of pretending to be what one is not. Being a Coen film, it is also laced with an icy humour. Composer Carter Burwell (also responsible for scoring Millers Crossing) adds immensely to the atmosphere, and McDormands award is richly deserved. As with all Coen movies, the old cliche applies 'Amply repays repeated viewings' PM. Winner of 2 Academy awards - best actress and best screenplay.
