Film Description

Spielberg's brilliant audience shocker remains arguably his finest film. Devoid of the sentimentality that mars much of his later work, the acute sense of time and place and the witty reinvention of 50s monster/sci-fi movies still seems fresh and hugely entertaining.

Review by Dan Hunter on 8th August 2005

The term 'blockbuster' was coined for Jaws and its unprecedented financial success substantially changed the way Hollywood films were produced and distributed. This is the film that brought the sun down on the golden age of inventive, independent-minded filmmaking of the 1970s by attracting a new ethos where the impossible (and destructive) idea of a 'guaranteed success' became the cardinal factor in making movies.

However, Jaws remains an exceptional film. It is a simple tale executed brilliantly with a central theme of prehistoric resonance and simplicity - man versus nature. It plays further - what is lurking in the unseen depths of the sea, where man is out of his element?

Spielberg is yet to make a better film. The construction and pacing are watertight; the shark attacks are expertly directed - savage and shocking yet leaving much to our imagination. Once the hunt is underway the sense of adventure is acute, swelling to the sounds of John Williams' wonderful score, and the triumphant dénouement strikes the bullseye of Hollywood-style filmmaking.

It is ironic that Hollywood adapted to recreate the success of Jaws but has utterly failed to make anything as good since.

Oscars Winners - Great films, up to 70% off by MovieMail

This year, MovieMail has decided to dispense with the standard list of award-winners, and lift the curtain on some of the lesser-known categories in which many rare and exciting films reside.
The following movies were singled out for important aspects of the film-making craft and, we think, are the titles which glister brightest in Uncle Oscar's auric eye.
