Review by cj on 7th December 2000 In 1861, the Southern Confederacy is formed and the American Civil War ignites. Friends Jake and Jack join the Bushwhackers, a unit formed to raid the North Union soldiers. With the fierce winter looming their unit must separate and find shelter, their quest helped by a young widow called Sue Lee. Ang Lee's terrific film is the best Western for many years, with fine performances from its young stars and a potent sense of time and place, directed with verve and consummate skill.
