Following in the footsteps of his ancestor, the explorer Alvise da Mosto, architect and historian Francesco da Mosto journeys from Venice across the Mediterranean Sea to discover the cities and islands where Western civilization was born. Sailing in a late nineteenth-century schooner, with a feisty Italian crew, Francesco provides viewers with a very personal cultural account of the places he visits. Highlights include the spectacular ruins of the Acropolis in Athens and the sacred site of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, sites that Francesco brings to life as he shares legends and stories from Ancient history. The sailing sequences between stop-offs give the documentary a particularly human and down-to-earth appeal and add light contrast to the more educational aspects of the programme. With its gorgeous cinematography and infectiously enthusiastic presenter you’ll want to pack your bags and head off to see the many marvels with your own eyes.

Film Description

Venetian architect and historian Francesco da Mosto sets out from Venice to cross the Mediterranean sea - following in the wake of his ancestor, the explorer Alvise da Mosto - to discover the cities and islands where Western civilization was born. Sailing in a late nineteenth-century schooner, he starts his journey in Venice and finishes in Istanbul. Along the way he takes in spectacular ruins like the Acropolis in Athens and the Roman city of Ephesus in Turkey; sacred sites like the monasteries of Mount Athos and the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. Ancient history and bygone legends intertwine as Francesco visits these wonderful ancient sites, bringing the past vividly to life.
