Film Description

One of the most extraordinary films in the history of cinema and as important and watchable now as when it was made. It's an exhilarating and often hilarious montage showing people at work and play and the machines that keep the city moving. Vertov uses a dazzling array of cinematic techniques - dissolves, double exposures, fast and slow motion, freeze frames, jump cuts, split screens, tracking shots, backwards footage - to create a witty, politicised commentary on his times.

The film was made without a soundtrack, which is here provided by Michael Nyman, whose energetically industrial rhythms provides an excellent counterpoint to the images.
