Film Description

All eight episodes from the first season of the 'Life on Mars' spinoff series. The series sees the return of DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister), but he is no longer the self styled 'Sheriff of Manchester'. Drawn by the action and intrigue of the London Met, Gene has turned his attentions to taking on the 'southern nancy' criminal scum. He is joined by his faithful sidekicks Ray Carling (Dean Andrews) and Chris Skelton (Marshall Lancaster). DCI Alex Drake (Keeley Hawes) is also thrown into the mix after suffering a horrific accident in 2008 and finding herself in 1981 alongside Hunt and his team.

Review by MovieMail on 6th May 2008

The BBC’s follow-up to the acclaimed
Life on Mars follows DCI Gene Hunt
(Glenister) and his team, who have
been relocated to early 1980s
London. This time, they are joined by
DI Alex Drake (Hawes), who wakes
up in 1981 after being shot in 2007.
As a police psychologist, Drake
already knows the mystery of what
happened to Sam Tyler in Life on
Mars, but that doesn’t mean she
finds eighties Britain – or Hunt’s resolutely
un-PC attitudes – any easier to
cope with (and the fact she knows
she is trapped in a coma doesn’t help
either).

Having moved on from the drab
palette of the 1970s, Ashes to Ashes
has a lighter, more colourful feel. As
usual, the recreation of the period
setting is spot on, with clothes, hair
and makeup just as frightful as we
remember, and an evocative soundtrack
featuring the likes of The Clash
and a whole flock of New Romantics.
With clever storylines and some
unexpected guest cameos, fans of
Life on Mars – and Glenister’s inimitable
DCI Hunt – would have to be
comatose to miss it.
