Breathless (McBride, 1983)
Film Description
A remake of Godard's seminal nouvelle vague film A bout de souffle (Breathless) transplanted to 1980s LA. Richard Gere takes the Belmondo role as the preening hustler, here pursuing a French girl in California (instead of a French man pursuing an American girl in Paris). Obviously a remake of such a sacred cow was always going to arouse the wrath of cinephiles, but many seem to be finding this to be a great homage to a film that was itself a homage. It features a superb soundtrack too, with a range of artists from The Pretenders to Link Wray.
