Film Description

In this RSC production of August Strindberg's classic play, Helen Mirren gives an acclaimed performance as the bored and restless daughter of a Count who finds herself getting involved with her father's the arrogant footman, Jean.

After a flirtatious encounter at the servants' Midsummer party, both Julie and Jean see each other as a means of escape from the trappings of their lives. Together they plan their getaway, but it is an alliance which can only end in tragedy.

With a typically show-stealing performance, Mirren is at her very best in this early role that set her on the road to stardom.
