Review by Peter Curtis on 20th December 2007

The original 3:10 to Yuma (Delmer Daves, 1957), is thought of as an unjustly neglected classic. This brilliant re-make will hopefully raise its profile that little bit higher. Dan Evans (Christian Bale) is down on his luck. He lost a leg in the war and is stuck in a dustbowl ranch in the middle of nowhere. In desperation he accepts a job for $200 escorting infamous outlaw Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) to the 3:10 train to Yuma and from there, on to the gallows. The problem is that Wade's vicious gang are out there and intent on rescue...

This is a pure unreconstructed Western built on two great performances from the ever-reliable Crowe and Bale; the stoic hero and charming outlaw stereotypes are subverted with nuanced performances. Bale portrays a desperate man, and for all his attempted heroism he never comes across as anything other than a failure. For all his charm Crowe's Wade is still a vicious killer and you never feel comfortable when he is on screen.
