Film Description
Between 1961-63, Ingmar Bergman made three films that evoked a desperate world confronted with God’s desertion: Through a Glass Darkly (1961); Winter Light (1962) and The Silence (1963). With minimal dialogue, isolated settings and performances from Bergman regulars such as Max von Sydow, Harriet Andersson, Gunnar Bjornstrand, Ingrid Thulin and Gunnel Lindblom, and drawing on Bergman’s own severely religious upbringing and ensuing spiritual crisis, these films are deeply personal, challenging and enriching works.
