Film Description

The Retour de Flamme collection got its name from a daunting challenge - to save from the flames early films shot on inflammable nitrate stock, and to make these rare treasures available to the biggest possible audience. Volume 6 of this eclectic series contains Down in the Deep: Le Pêcheur de perles (Zecca, 1907); Suspense (Lois Weber, 1913); Balloonland (Iwerks, 1935); Naughty Boys (1905); Bip... Bip... Bip... Ici Paris (1950); Post No Bills (1923); Making an American Citizen (Alice Guy-Blaché, 1912); Makin 'Em Move (1931); Giraffe Hunting in Uganda (1910); The Pest (1922); Gregor and his Gregorians (1930); French Commercials (1935-1955) and the final part of the serial adventure, Flight Around the World (1924).

Review by Graeme Hobbs on 30th October 2007

With titles such as The Pearl Fisherman (1907), Giraffe Hunting in Uganda (1910), French Commercials (1935-1955) and Bip... Bip... Bip... Ici Paris (1950), any amateur of the curios of silent and early cinema will already be convinced that they need to see this collection – the sixth in the series – of films rescued from the decomposition of destruction of highly flammable nitrate film stock. The real treasures here though are hidden by anonymous titles. Suspense is a generic title, but the film is a short by pioneering female director Lois Weber, and its angles, split-screens and unusual compositions used in telling the story of a woman fearful for her safety in her house as an intruder threatens, lift it above the ordinary. There is also a film from Alice Guy-Blaché, considered to be the first female director in the industry, who comes up trumps with Making an American Citizen (1912), a film about the re-education of a boorish man in the ways of the land of the free. The Pest is a fairly anonymous title too, but it is in fact a very good, and otherwise uncollected Stan Laurel short, directed by Broncho Billy Anderson, while Balloonland is a ComiColor animated short from Ub Iwerks (Walt Disney’s chief collaborator and the creator of Mickey Mouse). There is even a fifties strip film. Another eclectic and highly entertaining volume in the series.

The year is 1908. The steady torrent of coins increases daily in nickelodeon parlors throughout the world, and every two months the entire population of the globe is exceeded by the number of people patronizing the world’s movie theatres.

But within several...  View article in full
