Film Description

Alexander Dovzhenko's masterpiece was supposed to promote the collectivisation of the Soviet rural economy, but was judged too confusing for its intended audience of largely illiterate peasants. No wonder: this is a great film poem, as much a paean to a pagan past as a depiction of the march of progress.
