Operating on the margins of mainstream production in Italy, Olmi’s first contact with the cinema was as a documentary filmmaker. His early films, on various aspects of life and work during the miracolo economico, can be compared to the films of John Grierson’s GPO Unit in Britain the 1930s.

Il Posto (1961) is a wonderfully observed comedy-drama telling the story of Domenico, a young man from the country who arrives in Milan to join a major firm. As he undergoes his entry exams he meets Antonietta but pressures from work ensure that their relationship remains in stasis. Olmi’s second feature is undoubtedly one of the key Italian films of the 1960s. < less
