Film Description

6 films from one of America's top actors.

Papillon (Franklin, J Schaffner, 1973)
One man sentenced to life in the French prison system refuses to give up trying to escape even when transferred to the prison colony on Devil's Island. Despite years of degradation and horror, the undying spirit of "Papillon" lives on.

Kramer vs Kramer (Robert Benton, 1979)
Joanna Kramer, a Manhattan housewife, can no longer face life with her husband Ted. She walks out leaving her son Billy in Ted's charge. Ted has to adjust his life and face up to his new found responsibilities. Just as he starts to find his feet, Joanna returns, intent on fighting for custody of her son. Based on the best-selling novel by Avery Coleman.

Tootsie (Sydney Pollack, 1984)
When theatrical mastermind Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman) finds himself blacklisted by just about every producer in the acting business, he decides to thwart the entertainment industry by disguising himself as an older woman and auditioning for a daytime soap opera. Dorsey arrives for the audition in a dress and makeup. Calling himself Dorothy Michaels, he/she gives an astonishing screen test and is hired on the spot by the show's executive. Dorsey is an overnight sensation with the show's fans, but as his secret career escalates, his relationship with his girlfriend suffers. Soon Dorsey finds a new romantic interest at work with his co-star, Julie. The only problem is, Julie thinks Dorsey is a woman and it's not long before she's trying to fix up Dorothy with her single father. This is a rich, funny, complex film, whose boldness exposes movie-goers to the challenges faced by a modern cross-dresser. Supporting players Geena Davis and Bill Murray create plenty of comedy relief to help the plot along.

Stranger Than Fiction (Marc Forster, 2006)
An inventive comedy about a novelist (Emma Thompson) who is struggling to complete her latest book. All she has to do is find a way to kill off her main character, Harold Crick. Little does she know that Crick is inexplicably alive and well in the real world and also aware of her words. Fiction and reality collide when the bewildered and resistant Harold hears what she has in mind and realizes he must find a way to change her, and his, ending.

Joan Of Arc: The Messenger (Luc Besson, 1999)
A reworking of the story of the Maid of Orleans, Besson's Joan is truly his own, a flashily-shot extravagance in which a 15th century girl becomes the neurotic heroine of a history lesson for the slacker generation. Jovovich's 'Babe of Orleans' is so cool she makes Hilary Swank look like the class swot.

Accidental Hero (Stephen Frears, 1992)
When a reporter is saved from death in a plane crash, she starts a search for 'the angel of flight 204'. A Vietnam vet comes forward to usurp the true hero's identity.
