Actor, athlete, singer and civil rights activist, Paul Robeson was a true Renaissance man who could sing and talk in more than 20 languages. He is best known in cinematic circles for the films he made in Britain in the 1930s. This collection comprises:

Sanders of the River (Zoltan Korda, 1935)

Described as 'a grand theme, vivid spectacle and gripping drama', this is the first of Korda's romantic Empire movies which proved to have widespread audience appeal. This version of the film is taken from a new, digitally-

restored HD print.

Song of Freedom (J. Elder Wills, 1936)

One of the earliest films that dealt with sensitivity about a black man’s search for his cultural background in Africa – predating shows like Roots by four decades. Not seen since its theatrical release in the 1930s.

King Solomon's Mines (Robert Stevenson, 1937)

Based on H. Rider Haggard’s exciting novel this tale of action and adventure tells the story of a group of explorers in search of a diamond mine.

Big Fella (J. Elder Wills, 1937)

A Marseille dock-worker befriends a small boy and reunites him with his parents following their separation after arriving on an ocean liner. A massive success, Big Fella includes Robeson singing "Lazin'", "Roll Up Sailorman" and

"You Didn’t Ought to Do Such Things". Not previously release on any format.

Body and Soul (Oscar Micheaux, 1925)

One of Oscar Micheaux's artistic triumphs in which Paul Robeson plays a dissolute, venal black preacher with a double life.
