The Ernest Hemingway CollectionVarious , 1950-62 Film DescriptionFour films adapted from the stories of one of the 20th century's great writers, Ernest Hemingway.
In Under My Skin (Jean Negulesco, 1950), jockey Danny Butler wins a steeplechase he had agreed to throw and is roughed up and threatened by the racketeer he disappointed. Dan and his young son travel through Europe, where Dan hopes to win enough to pay off Bork and get Joe safely back to America. Based on the story My Old Man, from Hemingway's Three Stories and Ten Poems (1923).
The Snows of Kilamanjaro (Henry King, 1952) sees Gregory Peck as writer Harry Street, who lies gravely wounded from a hunting accident, and feverishly reflecting on his life, loves and failures. His wife tends to his wounds, listens to his ranting and his talk of lost loves, and tries to restore in him the will to fight his illness until help arrives.
A Farewell To Arms (1957) is a passionate remake of the classic 1932 Frank Borzage film in which an American (Rock hudson) in the Italian Army is wounded in action and is nursed back to health by a pretty English nurse (Jennifer Jones).
In Hemingway’s Adventures of a Young Man (Martin Ritt, 1962) a young man leaves his rural Michigan home to cross the country and learn a little about life. After encounters with (among others) a punch-drunk ex-boxer (Paul Newman) and an alcoholic frontman for a burlesque show, he enlists as an ambulance driver for army during World War I. Based on Hemingway's autobiographical 'Nick Adams' stories.
