Xanadu (Robert Greenwald, 1980) is a bizarre guilty pleasure, starring Olivia Newton-John as an alien incarnated as a girl who helps an artist build a roller disco rink with the aid of an elderly benefactor (Gene Kelly). A film that has won something of a cult following, this is dreadfully good fun, and will have you singing along to ELO's title number by the end of the credits. One of a kind.

Sweet Charity (Bob Fosse, 1969), is a slight tale of a dance-hall hostess looking for love in New York, transformed by Bob Fosse into a parade of electrifying dance routines, filmed with a daring lack of conventionality. Featuring a witty screenplay by Neil Simon, a highly engaging central performance by Shirley Maclaine, and a host of great Broadway tunes such as ‘Big Spender’ and ‘If My Friends Could See Me Now’.

Thoroughly Modern Millie (George Roy Hill, 1967) follows an innocent girl's arrival to the city where she becomes the secretary of a rich and powerful man. In search of a husband she meets a variety of suitors before love is finally found. Music score by Elmer Bernstein.
