Film Description
A collection of seven classic films starring Dirk Bogarde. Comprises:
The Blue Lamp (Basil Dearden, 1950)
Very British thriller famous largely due to the fact that it represented the first incarnation of George Dixon, the friendly neighbourhood bobby of long running TV series 'Dock Green' fame. His world of policing has a rude awakening in the form of reckless youth Bogarde.
The Sleeping Tiger (Joseph Losey, 1954)
Losey's first British feature. A psychoanalyst installs one of his patients,a handsome young gunman, in his home, only to discover his wife's latent passions aroused. A tense and baroquely directed melodrama.
Victim (Basil Dearden, 1961)
Bogarde took a large career risk with his portrayal of a blackmailed homosexual barrister who has to decide whether or not to reveal his secret. Deciding to admit to his situation, he puts his reputation and marriage in jeopardy. An interesting piece of social history, not least because it was made when homosexual acts were a crime.
The Servant (Joseph Losey, 1963)
Northern working-class butler Bogarde gradually assumes the dominant role over his feeble master Fox. Critically acclaimed (adored by many French critics), with excellent performances, Losey's wholly assured collaboration with playwright Harold Pinter is a dark, fascinating examination of class, decadence, sex and power. A key 60s British film.
Accident (Joseph Losey, 1967)
Rivalry and sexual tension simmer under a glacial surface of detached companionship and leafy academia in this, Harold Pinter and Joseph Losey's second screen collaboration. Pinter's script is suitably spare and perplexing; Losey's direction slow and deliberate. Beginning with the death (in a car crash) of an Oxford student, the film is constructed around enigmatic, emotionally strained flashbacks of the events that precede the accident. On the surface, the film appears to exclude the casual viewer, but, underneath, something draws you in.
In Hunted (1952) and The Spanish Gardener (1956) Bogarde starred alongside child actor Jon Whitely. Both films told of an unlikely but genuine friendship that blossoms between adult and child in the midst of extreme and tragic circumstances.
In Hunted (Charles Crichton, 1952) Bogarde plays a violent fugitive who abducts a small, mistreated boy as insurance.
The Spanish Gardener (Philip Leacock, 1956) is the story of a diplomat (Michael Hordern), who is separated from his wife and obsessively over-protective towards his son, not allowing him to interact properly with children his own age or in fact with anyone.
When José (Dirk Bogarde) is hired as the gardener, his friendly attitude towards the boy sparks off violent jealousy in the father.
Sandwiched in between these two films was Bogarde’s first collaboration with the black-listed Hollywood director Joseph Losey, Sleeping Tiger (1954).
Hunted, Sleeping Tiger and The Spanish Gardener are all new to DVD.
