Review by Doug Cummings on 21st May 2007
Don't mistake this for a routine filmmaker biography – with works by Chris Marker, Aleksandr Sokurov, and Tarkovsky himself, it is a truly substantial collection.
Foremost is Marker's essay film, One Day in the Life of Andrei Arsenevitch, a brilliant, poetic, and loving examination of Tarkovsky's work juxtaposed with private footage of the 54-year-old Russian auteur reuniting with his family on his Parisian deathbed. Tarkovsky had defected from the Soviet Union several years earlier, but the authorities denied visas for his wife and son. Marker records their reunion with tasteful reserve while ruminating on the motifs, themes, flourishes and mystical import of Tarkovsky's abbreviated but beguiling career.
Sokurov's Moscow Elegy offers his own reverent tribute, and Tempo di Viaggio beautifully captures moments from Tarkovsky's preparations in Italy to film Nostalghia.

Pasquale Iannone's Films of the Year 2007 by Pasquale Iannone
2007 was another excellent year for DVD releases of classic films making their first appearance on home video in the UK. Special mention must go to Second Run with their wonderful, ever-impressive catalogue and also to Arrow for their Fassbinder releases. These are some of my highlights
