Review by R. Dixon Smith on 12th March 2007
Harold Lloyd was one of the greatest comic talents of the silent era, an age of film that thrived on laughter and joy. He made his impact on cinema during a period of rising national prosperity, when Wall Street boomed and the country was full of go-getters, success stories, and money madness.
Lloyd began his career with Mack Sennett and then moved over to the Hal Roach lot. Once he had perfected his techniques in two-reelers, he turned to longer, feature comedies. Only Rin-Tin-Tin was said to have made more money than Harold Lloyd did in Hollywood during the 1920s. He was simply that popular and that funny.
Lloyd was more prolific than Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton, making nearly two-hundred comedy shorts between 1915-1921, and experimenting with several different characters before he discovered the glasses that became his trademark. By the time he formed his own independent studio to produce feature comedies, he had already found his own comic character, the affable boy with the glasses – eager to get ahead, not particularly good at anything, but willing to substitute energy for his lack of ability. His bespectacled go-getter – boyish, sincere, sometimes shy, often brash, full of confidence, optimism, and gaiety – is determined to take the world by its tail. He parodied the American dream of success and burlesqued the peppy, young American hustler.
This Harold Lloyd set contains ten hilarious shorts made between 1918-1921. Among the highlights are High and Dizzy, one of its star's famous thrill pictures that use heights for effect, and which takes place, in part, hundreds of feet above the street on the ledge of a skyscraper. Then there’s Among Those Present, in which he plays an ambitious cloakroom checker who impersonates an English nobleman, and the classic Get Out and Get Under (one of the first movies Lloyd made after being badly injured by a prop bomb that exploded in his face), which chronicles the misadventures of a boy and his Model T Ford.
The great silent comedies never become dated. Just try to catch your breath between laughs.

Forget the extras, the key feature of DVD is the opportunity it affords to see films that no longer reach our TV screens now the major channels have abandoned proper cinema in favour of blockbusters and teleplays. The following are compilations of pictures that have too long been inaccessible. More of the same, please.
