Chris Noonan, 2006

Star Review

Appropriately for its subject, this is an elegant, low-key, whimsical biopic of Beatrix Potter that follows her rise to being one of the most successful children’s authors of all time. It features a sweetly eccentric performance from hamster-faced Renée Zellweger as the titular author, along with solid support from the likes of Ewan McGregor (as her publisher and fiance Norman Warne) and Emily Watson. It’s also a story of rebellion against the mores of Victorian society, with Potter choosing respect through her art over the more conventional route of marriage.
The film’s period details of upper middle class Victorian society are fascinatingly detailed and the Lake District scenery is, as you would expect, wonderful. With eye-catching animation that sees the likes of Mrs Tiggywinkle, Peter Rabbit, Jeremy Fisher et al springing to life off the page and scampering about in the background, Miss Potter is gentle entertainment firmly in the Shadowlands camp. A sure family favourite, this is the kind of DVD that should appear at the top of every gift list!

Film Description

The life and story of the woman who created Peter Rabbit, Jeremy Fisher and Mrs Tiggy-Winkle shows that Beatrix Potter was a headstrong pioneer in Edwardian England who had to fight for success in a mans' world. She became a celebrity whose secret love affair with her publisher Norman Warne, haunted her throughout her life. Both funny and sad, this makes great use of the beautiful Lake District landscape and has Renee Zellweger at her formidable best.
