First seen in Aardman’s A Close Shave (where he irritated Wallace by scoffing all the cheese), Shaun is the sharpest sheep in his flock. When the farmer’s back is turned, Shaun gets his woolly chums into all manner of schemes, including a weight-loss programme, landscape painting and apple scrumping.
As you would expect from Aardman, the adventures shepherded onto this DVD are an absolute joy: funny, inventive and lovingly crafted. And, like most Aardman films, adults will get as much out of them as the kids they were ostensibly made for. The sheer energy of these shorts, not to mention the seemingly effortless wit and timing, makes them irresistible.
Shaun is a welcome reminder of why the world embraced Aardman to its collective bosom in the first place. He’s also proof – as if we didn’t know it after their variable feature-length outings – that they are stronger at sprinting than they are at marathons. Let’s hope that they take us back to the paddock again and show us what Shaun & co got up to next.
