Film Description

Of the three films that make up director Alan J. Pakula's 'paranoid trilogy' alongside Klute and All the President's Men, The Parallax View most strongly mirrors the political distrust Americans began to feel during the period following the Kennedy assassination and the Vietnam War, culminating in the Watergate conspiracy.
An ever-twisting plot and creeping sense of paranoia is brought to life by Gordon Willis' superb cinematography. Warren Beatty stars as investigative journalist Joe Frady, whose former girlfriend and colleague Lee Carter (Paula Prentiss) witnesses the assassination of a US Senator at the Seattle Space Needle. A government report declares it the work of a lone gunman, but when eyewitnesses begin showing up dead, Carter is convinced that a wider conspiracy is at work. Probing deeper, Frady uncovers the operations of the mysterious Parallax Corporation, and learns its deadly secret...

Article - "All Eyes on Me: Paranoia in Cinema" by James Oliver
Tuesday 11th September 2007

Like all art, movies reflect the culture in which they were created. So it's no wonder that the movies made since the second world war are awash with paranoia. The modern world has provided ideal conditions for paranoia to thrive in. It's not just the moonbats who th...  View article in full
