Film Description Aka The Thing. Howard Hawks produced and supervised this fifties sci-fi classic in which a military unit are called out to investigate a mysterious crash site in the frozen wastes of the Arctic. On arrival, they discover an unidentified disc-shaped craft from which they manage to save the alien pilot who, on return to base, defrosts and begins to wreak havoc, giving the men the choice of destroy or be destroyed. Review by Barry Forshaw on 16th April 2007 Although Christian Nyby is the putative director of this imperishable science fiction classic, it is now generally acknowledged that the producer Howard Hawks was the true guiding force. It’s the classic Hawksian situation: a group of professionals in an isolated setting deal with immense danger, using their professionalism to survive. In this case, of course, the setting is an isolated arctic atation, and the danger is a murderous alien entity (more vegetable than human) cutting a swathe through the cast. While John Carpenter's remake has its virtues, the Nyby/Hawks film is the real deal: just as intelligent and exciting as ever, with that trademark Howard Hawks overlapping dialogue lending verisimilitude to the fantastic situation.
