A strikingly beautiful adaptation of Charlotte's Bronte's gothic romance, this BBC drama breathes new life into a much-filmed story. There is a strong focus on the relationship between Jane and Toby Stephens' Mr. Rochester, and the earlier passages of the novel, such as Jane's miserable childhood, are depicted in a few minutes of screen time. Although traditionalists may quibble with this approach, they should be delighted with the manner in which the subdued passion is handled, with relative newcomer Ruth Wilson's subtle facial expressions beautifully conveying the inner thoughts of the enigmatic heroine. Toby Stephens (Maggie Smith's son) is also impressive and joins the list of great Rochesters.
The drama uses prime Derbyshire locations and landscapes to great effect. The passion, drama and horror of the original are superbly delineated, and the dramatisation is particularly effective in its representation of Bertha and her tragic back story. A fresh look at an old classic, this is a worthy addition to the BBC's long history of world-class period drama.
